Mauritius is a paradise. However, climate change, growing human development, overfishing, marine pollution and more pressures are causing damages to its astounding marine wildlife. As divers, we are primary witnesses of these impacts. Marine debris for example, accumulate on our beautiful reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows, turning them into rubbish dumps. At Indigo Divers we take local action to prevent and reduce pressures on the marine ecosystem.
This first initiative was a success! 15 divers and 30 volunteers came together to clean both the lagoon and the beach of Trou d’eau Douce village. We estimated that over a ton of rubbish was collected underwater:
– over 400 plastic bottles
– about 120 metallic cans
– 12 car wheels
– 2 plastic tables (found underwater!)
– 1 broken fishing trap
– 1 car battery
Numerous debris were also collected on the beach; mostly plastic wraps and bags, <50mL plastic bottles, cigarette buts, plastic cups, lollipops sticks and straws. Overall, plastic was the major issue...
Plastic bottles and cans were disposed in recycling containers. All debris where sorted and counted and data was sent to Project Aware Foundation for an international underwater survey on marine debris.

The data collected is now available on the
Dive Against Debris Map. We are proud to say it is
the first data ever recorded in Mauritius!
From 10 am, certified SCUBA divers will collect rubbish in the lagoon while volunteers will walk the beach and the mangrove.
The afternoon will be dedicated to beach activities and environmental awareness. Games and activities will be organized with the involvement of TerrOcean.
An activity « Draw a marine animal » will be offered to the youngest. Their drawings will later be reproduced by an artist of Trou d’eau Douce on the bins of the public beach.
